This year is a year of discovery for me. Not only books but also songs I didn’t know even existed before. I’m not going to deny, I tend to listen to pop songs only or Taylor Swift’s discography so listening to these amazing songs I recently discovered is like a breath of fresh air to my ears.
So before the year ends, I want to share to you the songs that I discovered from reading books or listening to curated playlists that I hope you might also like.
I only stumbled upon this song because it’s one of the pop culture references in one of the books I’ve read this year. I didn’t even know that the song really existed. I thought it’s one of those made – up songs by bands that don’t really exist. I thought they just exist in the confines of the book’s universe I was reading. So as I was reading Openly, Honestly by Bill Konigsberg, I got curious about this song. This song was used in the book in a very powerful way. It provided an escape to one of the characters of the book when he badly needed it and is used to move the story forward. It’s not just a song thrown into the book that a character listens to but is a plot device.
“For I’m so scared of losing you
And I don’t know what I can do about it.”
One of the things I loved about the book is the discussion of the concept of “agape.” I don’t want to spoil anything but the books of Openly, Honestly universe are probably one of the most realistic in handling the concept of teenage crush/love. The song Agape fits right into the story. It’s like the song was written with the book in mind.
“I don’t want to know who I am without you.”
If you’ve read my previous posts, you already know why I love Flaws. I know Bastille even before because of their hit single Pompeii but I never really cared much about their music until this year only. I got reintroduced to the band after reading The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. I was so engrossed to the love story of Achilles and Patroclus that I started shipping Patrochilles as my OTP.
“You have always worn your flaws upon your sleeve
And I have always buried them deep beneath the ground.”
Because of my love for Patrochilles, I decided to look up songs and playlists inspired by their love story. Luckily, one of the songs that not only fits the book’s narrative but is also a great song I loved on first listen is Flaws.
“We picked ourselves undone.”
I don’t know why I love this song so much. Maybe it’s the lyrics, or the production but this song is so damn nostalgic to me. I came upon this song because of Taylor Swift’s Spotify playlist. This is one of the songs in that playlist that I instantly loved.
A song about an ex – girlfriend asking her ex – boyfriend if they both regret their decision to break – up and whether to get back together is the solution to their problem of missing each other. Who would not relate to that? Also, who could resist the song’s quirky music video?
“I’m coming back to you and I won’t let go again.”
AMUSED by Hunger. BLOOM by The Paper Kites. PART OF ME by Good Old War. BLACK by Dierks Bentley. BLOODSTAIN by Wrabel. ALL I EVER WANTED by Vance Joy. TO BE ALONE WITH YOU by Sufjan Stevens.
2017 is a great year for discovering new music. I got to discover a lot of artists and bands around the world that have rich and diverse catalogues. So now you know my song discoveries for this year, what are yours?
